The University of the South will officially welcome about 480 members of the Class of 2022 and other new students to the University with orientation beginning Saturday, August 25. Classes in the College begin Wednesday, August 29. Many first-year students arrived on the Mountain earlier for Finding Your Place (which began August 15) and PRE (August 22).

Members of the Class of 2022 hail from 29 states plus the District of Columbia, as well as Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Hungary, the Netherlands, Rwanda, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam. In addition to the 18 international students, five students have dual citizenship. And 53 members of the class are first-generation college students.

In terms of academic promise, the Class of 2022 is one of the strongest classes ever admitted to Sewanee. Almost 85 percent of the first-year students took at least one Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate course while in high school. Among those who did, students averaged 4.5 AP courses and 8.5 IB courses. 

Outside the classroom, members of the class have demonstrated an entrepreneurial bent (founding a photography company, for example); artistic talent (playing flamenco guitar, having a painting chosen to hang in the U.S. Capitol); and creative energy (producing a play, building musical instruments). Imagine what they will contribute to campus life—individually and together—over the next four years!

The four-day student orientation will include residence hall meetings and activities; information sessions, meetings and meals with academic advisors; a community picnic; and a class photo followed by the signing of the Honor Code. The Honor Code signing is both solemn and celebratory, and marks the official matriculation of students into the University of the South.
